“Books shouldn't be daunting, they should be funny, exciting and wonderful; and learning to be a reader gives a terrific advantage.”

–Roald Dahl

  1. Read the novel Ghost, by Jason Reynolds.
  2. Design a movie poster for the book. Use an unlined sheet of white paper and include:
    1. the author’s name
    2. book title
    3. scenes or images that relate to the greater meaning of the novel
    4. a tagline that sums up what you believe is the theme of the novel
Ex: Wonder- “Choose Kind”, Trolls- “Find Your Happy Place”, Avengers: Infinity War- “An Entire Universe. Once and for all.”
    5. Then, type one paragraph explaining why you chose these scenes or images and your tagline for the poster. Why are these images important to the story? Show your understanding of the novel through this response. In particular, explain what you believe to be the theme or message.
  3. Read one book from the MS Reading Extravaganza Book List (see box below).
  4. Read at least one other book.
See the Bancroft Library page, “What should I read next?” for ideas, but it can be any book that interests you.
  5. Write a list of books (including the three above) you read this summer.
    1. Underline titles and write the author’s full name. Put a star next to any book you would recommend to me.
    2. At the bottom of the list, tell me why you read what you read in 1-3 sentences, total. (You don’t need to explain why you read each book, but why you read that list of books.) Particularly, what drew you to these books? Did you like them? Why?
    3. Have your parents sign the list.
  6. Finally, write an “Independent Reading Plan” with titles and authors. Find at least 5 book titles and authors you would like to read this year outside of school. Friends and family members might have good suggestions for you! Make a list of these 5 books so you can refer back to it throughout the year.
  7. On September 3rd, bring (1) your copy of Ghost, (2) your poster, (3) paragraph, (4) the list of books you have read and (5) ORB plan to school.

Happy reading!
