2023 Summer Reading & Assignments: Middle School

Getting Started

To use this guide, begin by selecting your grade level/program from the tabbed menu at the top of the box below.  

Review the assignments detailed on your grade level/program tab and use the resources below in the MS Reading Extravaganza and Useful Links boxes to help you in completing your work.

Assignments by Grade: 6-8

       6th Grade Summer Reading

  • Read a total of 3 books (or more if you choose) and complete the Summer Reading Log found in the assignment
    • Book one: Read something written by the author  Kwame Alexande
    • Book two: Read a book written for your age published in 2021 or 2022
    • Book three: Choose a book from the MS Reading Extravaganza Book List (see box below).

6th Grade HGP Summer Reading

  • Review and complete the linked assignment:
    • Read a selection from the MS Reading Extravaganza Book List (see box below). 

      There is no assignment associated with this selection. We will be meeting in book talk groups to discuss the story during the first week of school. (I recommend you take notes to help you remember the story - sticky note bullet summaries, brain frame, etc

    • Read a book by Kwame Alexander. A list of his books and additional details are in the assignment linked below. 

    • Read a book from a series. Series are a great way to develop a healthy reading habit and find a genre you enjoy. 

    • Keep a list of additional books you may read this summer. Bring it to school on the first day of class. See recommendations on the last page of the assignment linked below. 

    • Write me a letter about yourself and mail it to me. An example is in the assignment linked below.

Summer 2023: 7th Grade English

  1. Read the novel Ghost, by Jason Reynolds.
    • Once you have finished reading Ghost, type two paragraphs explaining how the main character grows and develops throughout the story.  Each paragraph must be at least 5-7 sentences in length. Be sure to include your name and date at the top of the page.
  2. Read one book from the MS Reading Extravaganza 2023 list.
  • There are great books to choose from on the list, have fun!
  • Just read, and enjoy the book; no written assignment!
  • If you would like, you can read more than one, but you do not have to, just an option.

        3. On the first day of school bring to school:

  •  your copy of Ghost to school; borrowed from a library, or your own
  •  your typed paragraphs printed out and ready to be handed in.
  •  your MS Extravaganza choice book selection; borrowed from a library, or your own. 

 

7th Grade HGP Summer Reading

Review the assignment for full details before you begin

  1. Write 1 Letter:
  • Who are you and include a moment from your summer
  1. Read Ghost by Jason Reynolds and Complete a 1 pager summary.
  2. Read one book from the MS Reading Extravaganza Book List (see box below) and Complete a 1 pager summary.
  3. Read at least one other book. This can be any book that interests you.
